Graceful Pearl & Rocaille Dutch builder Philip de Lange introduced Copenhageners to the Rococo when he built the residence at the Slotsholm Canal for Court Confectioner JH Ziegler, which was later combined with merchant Frantz Rausch's warehouse. Facing the canal, the house presented itself with well-proportioned grace, even before the Racecourse was built on the other side of the canal; the still preserved part of the first Christiansborg. French balcony framed by volutes and Rocaille ornamentation in sandstone speaks the nature-inspired language of the Rococo with breaks in symmetry and straight lines, and the farm appears at once graceful and light and magnificently impressive. At the end of the 18th century, Zieglers was owned by merchant Frederik de Koninck; he sailed the world's oceans with a fleet of 64 ships and left a lasting mark as the initiator of the forerunner of Dansk Erhverv. One of the greatest figures in Danish intellectual and cultural life, the hymn poet and Renaissance man NFS Grundtvig, lived in Ziegler's in the 1850s with his second wife, and decades later another notable married couple occupied the living rooms, namely Johan and Asa Rohde. He is co-founder of the artist association Den Frie and designer for Georg Jensen; she is Denmark's first female cand. mag. in history and English. We are proud of that.
