Bredgade 56

About this space

Among the artistically gifted Despite fine academic results and a great future predicted, architect Johan Jacob Deuntzer's career is modest. Bredgade 56 will be his only architectural legacy. At the time, the street was called Norgesgade, and in collaboration with the most recognized portrait and genre painter of the time, Professor D. Monies, Deuntzer had the building built over 5 floors. The style is historicism, and the builders are inspired by the soft and curved elements of the Rococo. This is expressed in the facade of the house, where Rocaille - seashells in stucco decorate the windows of the first floor. The author Holger Drachmann lives in the house for a number of years, and the attic is converted into a studio. Here, the versatile and sometimes controversial artist also works with painting, and by virtue of his close friendship with writer and critic Georg Brandes, he becomes one of the leading figures of the Modern Breakthrough in Danish literature; a free, uncivil and improvising artist.
