Sankt Annæ Plads 6

About this space

Business & Pleasure On the corner of Lille Strandstræde and Sankt Annæ Plads, tanner Niels Könsberg initially had the small white house built on two floors, typical of the Baroque, which is now singing its last verse. 20 years later, an extra floor is added, and the house takes on a classicist look; now with a new facade facing Lille Strandstræde decorated with frontispiece and garland relief. Despite the expansion in height, the building is still baroquely low compared to the neighboring properties, which are rapidly rising in connection with the establishment of Frederiksstaden to the north. The house therefore bears witness to the journey from medieval Copenhagen towards classicism – right on the divide between the old colorful Nyhavnskvarter and the new and elegant Frederiksstad, which also includes the construction of Sankt Annæ Plads. As always, a neighborhood with edge and space for both business and pleasure; in no. 6 there was also around the year 1900 a restaurant on the ground floor decorated with a glass ceiling and gold moldings - called Café Van Zandt and named after the American opera diva of the time Marie Van Zandt, who had taken Copenhageners by storm. In 2017, Skt Annæ Plads was newly decorated and climate-proofed by Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects and Landscape Architects Schønherr in conjunction with the city's new urban space at Ophelia Plads and the Theater House.
