The forge at Kalvebod Bastion - 4 Langebrogade, 1411, Denmark
Operated by Karberghus
About this space
All its own In the latter half of the 17th century, the defenses at Christianshavn were expanded to 12 bastions, from which Copenhagen can be protected against enemies who might dare to attack from Amager in the south, where rural conditions still prevail. And on the southernmost and twelfth bastion called Callebod or Kalvebod, a military guard house is erected. It is later converted into a forge, and the tall chimney is added to the small, low house, and a completely distinctive and whimsical "look" is created. There is a sense in the madness, however, because the chimney provides a proper draft necessary for the forge's operation. The forge is close to the water and the waterway, and the people of the lake use the forge when repairs are needed on the many ships that are docked in the harbor. Even when the forge is closed down and the yellow house with cozy shuttered windows becomes the private home of the bastion's responsible watchman, the chimney and name are allowed to remain.
